Ty’n Llan ; Where Tradition and Modern Design Meet
The restoration of Ty’n Llan in Llandwrog offered Derwen Joinery the chance to contribute to a project that brings traditional craftsmanship and modern construction standards together. Ty’n Llan has long served as a well‑loved community pub, and its refurbishment required a careful balance between preserving its historic character and introducing durable, reliable joinery suitable for a busy hospitality setting.
Working alongside the main contractor, T.G. Williams, our involvement spanned more than two years and covered an extensive range of bespoke timber products for both the interior and exterior of the building. Inside the pub, we manufactured and supplied fire‑rated internal door sets that comply with current safety standards while remaining sympathetic to the original architectural features. We also produced new door frames to support the refurbishment of existing doors, helping the upgraded elements blend seamlessly with the building’s traditional charm.

To enhance usability and create a warm, inviting atmosphere within the main customer areas, we crafted Douglas Fir shelving. This species was selected for its natural strength and attractive grain, offering both practicality and an appearance that complements the heritage interior.
A standout feature of the refurbishment is the bespoke Iroko bar top and accompanying shelving that we manufactured. Iroko was chosen for its exceptional durability and rich colouring qualities that make it well-suited to high‑traffic hospitality environments. The finished bar has become a central focal point within the pub, delivering both visual impact and long‑term resilience.
Externally, the project required joinery capable of withstanding challenging coastal weather while maintaining a traditional appearance. We supplied three bespoke external doors made entirely from Sapele, constructed using traditional mortice and tenon joints for strength and authenticity. Alongside this, we produced new fascia, soffit and barge boards from Red Grandis hardwood, a stable and durable material widely used for exterior joinery due to its consistency and strong performance in outdoor conditions.
The Ty’n Llan project showcases Derwen Joinery’s ability to support heritage buildings with high‑quality, specification‑driven timber solutions. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern standards, we helped reinvigorate a cherished community pub while ensuring the new joinery will endure for many years to come.
