Derelict to Desirable; Joinery Works at Lleiod Garage, Caernarfon

The redevelopment of the former Lleiod Garage in Caernarfon offered Derwen Joinery the opportunity to support Read Construction in transforming a long‑neglected site into a modern four‑storey apartment building. What was once a disused garage has now become a contemporary residential scheme, bringing much‑needed high‑quality homes to the area.
Our team was appointed to supply and manufacture the full internal joinery package, with particular focus on stringent fire safety requirements across the building. We produced and delivered a complete suite of certified fire doors for both communal areas and individual apartments, each manufactured to the correct performance ratings and verified standards. With fire doors forming a critical part of a residential building’s safety strategy, every unit was produced with absolute accuracy to ensure the safe containment of fire and smoke, protect escape routes, and provide valuable evacuation time for future residents.
To help create bright, welcoming internal spaces, Derwen Joinery also designed and supplied fourteen bespoke glazed fire‑rated screens. Manufactured using durable Sapele hardwood, each screen was fitted with 15mm clear Pyroguard glass and engineered to achieve 38dB acoustic performance. These units were tailored to suit the layout of the new apartments, balancing natural light, fire protection, and sound reduction while maintaining a consistent architectural aesthetic throughout the building.
Complementing the major joinery elements, we manufactured high‑quality MDF mouldings and pattresses, each produced with a 6mm chamfer to deliver a smooth, refined, and consistent finish across all interior spaces. These finer details contribute to the level of workmanship and reliable finish our clients expect from a specification‑driven project.
This development is an excellent example of Derwen Joinery’s ability to provide accurate, reliable, and compliant joinery solutions for residential construction. Working closely with Read Construction throughout the programme, we ensured the joinery package was delivered on time, met the design criteria, and supported the wider vision for revitalising a long‑derelict site in Caernarfon.
