Enhancing Efficiency and Enery Awareness; Derwen’s new CT Meter Installation

At Derwen Joinery, the quality of our craftsmanship is matched only by our commitment to running an efficient and forward‑thinking workshop. With a broad range of high‑powered timber machinery operating daily, understanding how we use energy is essential to working responsibly and sustainably.

To support this, we’ve recently installed a new CT (Current Transformer) energy‑monitoring system – a small piece of technology that will make a significant difference to the way our workshop operates.
For years, our only insight into electricity usage came from general readings provided by our utility supplier. While useful, they gave no breakdown of which machines or processes were responsible for the bulk of our consumption. As a busy joinery shop producing bespoke doors, windows, staircases and specialist timber components, having a clearer picture of how our equipment performs is vital.

The new CT meter changes that. It gives us real‑time visibility into how our machinery draws power throughout the day, allowing us to make informed decisions about efficiency, maintenance and sustainability.

This upgrade helps us:
  • Highlight machinery that uses the most energy
  • Detect unusual spikes which may indicate wear, faults or inefficiencies
  • Plan workloads at the most economical times
  • Reduce avoidable waste and minimise our environmental impact
For us, this isn’t only an energy‑saving measure. It’s an investment in productivity, quality and long‑term performance. By understanding how each machine behaves, we can maintain consistent standards, keep equipment at its best, and ultimately produce joinery of exceptional quality with fewer interruptions.
The data gathered over the coming months will play a key role in shaping further improvements across the workshop. From scheduling heavy‑load machines more intelligently to planning future upgrades, the CT meter gives us a level of insight we’ve not had before.
At Derwen Joinery, we’re proud to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern workshop technology. This installation marks another step in our ongoing efforts to work smarter, reduce our carbon footprint, and continue delivering the high‑quality timber joinery our customers expect.
