Bespoke Joinery for Newly Built Outbuilding

Derwen Joinery were approached by a private client living along the idyllic Anglesey coastline to create bespoke joinery for a newly built multi-use outbuilding designed to house vehicles, sailing equipment and other items needing protection from the coastal elements along with additional habitable spaces.

The project included a set of six parallel bi-fold doors with vision panels, along with a matching single doorset. Both were crafted from Abodo, a thermally modified timber sourced from New Zealand. Although relatively new to the UK market, Abodo is renowned for its durability, dimensional stability, and aesthetic appeal. Naturally dark brown on arrival, the timber was treated with WOCA Exterior Wood Oil in Grey, giving it a weathered, sun-bleached appearance that beautifully complements the coastal surroundings.

The client had a clear design vision: although the structure is new and contemporary, it needed to look aged and naturally weathered, blending effortlessly into the landscape. Once built, hung and fitted with hardware, the doors underwent a specialised distressing process. Our finishing team used a range of tools to roughen the timber surface to mimic the effects of years of exposure to sea air and wind, achieving an authentic, rustic finish.

This project demanded meticulous attention to detail to achieve perfect alignment of the profiles, lines, and margins between the door sets and the overhead machined cladding.

Security was also a key focus. To preserve a clean, minimal exterior, the client requested fully concealed hardware fitted on the inside of the bi-fold doors. This provided secure closure while maintaining the streamlined aesthetic.
