Bespoke Joinery for Newly Built Outbuilding
Derwen Joinery was approached by a private client on the scenic Anglesey coastline to design and manufacture a bespoke joinery package for a newly constructed multi‑use outbuilding. The building was created to house vehicles, sailing equipment and other valuable items requiring protection from the challenging coastal environment, while also offering flexible internal spaces for a variety of uses.
The client sought a contemporary structure that would sit naturally within its surroundings, adopting the appearance of a building weathered by years of coastal exposure despite being newly built. Achieving this required careful material selection, precise detailing and an exceptional standard of craftsmanship.
At the centre of the joinery package was a set of six‑panel parallel bi‑fold doors with glazed vision panels, designed to align perfectly with the machined timber cladding that forms the main elevation of the building.

The doors were crafted from Abodo, a thermally modified timber increasingly recognised across the UK for its durability, dimensional stability and refined contemporary grain. Naturally dark brown when supplied, the timber was treated with WOCA Exterior Oil in Grey, producing a soft, silvered finish reminiscent of coastal timber naturally aged by sunlight and sea air.
A core element of the client’s design brief was achieving an authentically weathered, time‑worn appearance. Once the doors were manufactured, hung and fitted with hardware, Derwen Joinery’s finishing team carried out a bespoke distressing process. Using a range of hand tools and specialist techniques, the timber surface was textured and subtly irregular, creating the impression of decades of exposure while retaining full structural integrity and long‑term performance.
Accuracy was essential throughout the project. The bi‑fold doors were designed to align precisely with the overhead cladding, with all profiles, margins and junctions working seamlessly together. The clean, contemporary front elevation relied on this level of precision, and our specialist team ensured a flawless integration between cladding and joinery.
Security played an important role in the final design. To maintain the building’s minimal, uninterrupted exterior appearance, the client requested that all locking mechanisms and hardware remain concealed internally. Derwen Joinery installed a high‑performance internal locking system that offered robust security without any visible fixings, hinges or external ironmongery.
This bespoke coastal project highlights Derwen Joinery’s ability to combine craftsmanship, technical precision and high‑performance materials to meet unique architectural visions – even in demanding environments.
